Memorial of St Lucy
There’s a saying - ‘a room full of geniuses who have closed their minds to the truth is no better off than a room full of fools who are incapable of recognizing the truth’.
This aptly describes the attitude of the chosen people of the Old and New Testament times towards God’s word, evident in the readings today. We hear Isaiah tell the Israelites how the Lord offered them the path to holistic living through the commandments. Sadly, they repeatedly disobeyed and stopped listening to the voice of God through his prophets, only to be consumed each time, by the devastating consequences of their sin. This is why Isaiah once again brings them God’s word, urging them to listen. Years passed, but nothing really changed. When confronted with John the Baptist’s message of ‘repentance’ and then Jesus’ challenge to love unconditionally, the people found it too much to handle. So, they simply closed themselves to the truth and condemned the prophet and the Messiah!
When we close our minds to the truth, we see things not as they are, but as we are.
