SOUND DESIGN FOR BEGINNERS: HOW I REMOVE NOISE & SAVE BAD RECORDINGS
Welcome back to my series SOUND DESIGN FOR BEGINNERS — in this episode I’m showing you how I clean noisy recordings, remove unwanted sounds, and repair damaged audio using Steinberg SpectraLayers 12.
I’ll walk you through some of my real-world techniques for fixing recordings while still keeping them natural, organic, and cinematic. You’ll see how I approach audio cleanup from a sound designer’s perspective — not just removing noise, but preserving the character, emotion, and realism of the recording.
In this video I’m also showing you how I recorded my famous green pepper sounds and how I clean and prepare the audio to make it perfect for the ASMR format. A lot of these same techniques can help you achieve very high-quality recordings for anyone interested in experimenting with ASMR, Foley, cinematic sound design, or immersive audio creation.
You’ll see real examples of cleaning and repairing audio recorded:
• Inside my studio
• Outdoors in real-world environments
• Even inside a Boeing 767 aircraft
I cover:
• Removing unwanted background noise
• Repairing problematic recordings
• Cleaning harsh frequencies and resonances
• Preserving natural detail and texture
• Preparing recordings for ASMR-style listening
• Quick workflow tips I use in professional projects
• My approach to keeping recordings sounding authentic and cinematic
This series is designed to help beginners understand real sound design workflows using practical techniques you can apply immediately to your own projects.
At the end of the video I’m also answering a couple of your questions from the community, including:
• “How much of the sound in your projects comes from your own recordings vs sound libraries like Boom Library?”
• “Do you sometimes incorporate your sound design into compositions or musical beds using field recordings and manipulated sound as source material?”
Thank you for all the incredible support on this new series — more episodes are coming soon.
