Structure and packaging of DNA – chromatid & chromosome
In eukaryotic cells, most of the genetic information is located in the nucleus in the form of DNA. Did you know that the total length of DNA in the nucleus of a human cell is about three meters? This is roughly 300,000 times the diameter of the nucleus. We'll take a closer look at why DNA still fits into the nucleus below. To fit the genetic material (DNA) into the cell nucleus, it is packaged and thus protected.
The layers of DNA packaging are formed by the nucleosomes (histone-DNA complexes), the chromatin filament, the chromatin, and the chromosomes.
Chromatin (uncondensed DNA) is predominantly present in interphase.
The chromatid is formed by further folds and loops on a protein scaffold.
Depending on the cell cycle phase, DNA exists as a one- or two-chromatid chromosome.
The two chromatids of a two-chromatid chromosome are also called sister chromatids and are visible during cell division (mitosis). The condensed form enables DNA transport.
