This video shows how to install Q2ID on Macintosh or Windows. Adobe InDesign must be installed, as Q2ID is a plug-in to InDesign.
What You Receive When the Product is Purchased (downloaded/CD + AC)
When you receive the product by email or download, you'll see the plug-in is compressed as a ZIP file. To unpack the file, double click on the document, after which you will find the Plugins for both InDesign CS2, CS3, and CS4, in a separate folder. If you received a CD, you will find the unpacked versions in the "Install Software/Q2ID" folder.
Which Version of the Plugin to Choose (CS2, CS3, or CS4)
If you are working with CS2, the Q2ID Plugin you want to install is the one with the name that ends in ".framework". If you are working with CS3 or CS4, you will need the Plugin with the name that ends in ".InDesignPlugin". I will now install Q2ID for CS3, but the folders I mention for CS3 are the same as in CS2 or CS4; only the Plugin, itself, slightly differs.
Where to Find the Destination Folder
To enable the Q2ID Plugin to work, you will have to place it in the "Filter" folder of InDesign. This is where to find this folder. Open your HardDisk, by double clicking the HD icon and open the Application folder from the window. You will now see a folder named, "Adobe InDesign CS3". Open it by double clicking. Now, find the "Filter" folder that is placed within the "Plugins" folder. To be short, you can find the folder on a Macintosh for example at:
[Macintosh HD]/Applications/Adobe InDesign/Plug-Ins/Filters.
This is similar on a Windows computer, just find the "Adobe InDesign" folder and, within there, you will find the "Plugins" folder and, further in there, the "Filters" folder. The only thing left is to copy the right Q2ID Plugin into this folder, and you are ready to Activate. Note that when you are installing an upgrade for Q2ID, you delete the older version from this Filter folder. Leaving it there will cause the Plugin to fail.
Entering the Activation Code
When you startup InDesign, after installing the Plugin, you will be prompted with the Activation Code Window for Q2ID. This Activation Code can be found on the inside of the box, if you received the Plugin on CD, or can be found in the email you received from either our online reseller, Avangate, or from your local reseller, via email.
When you purchased an upgrade, you will first have to enter the Activation Code from the update, after which you will be asked to enter the Activation Code from your original full version. It is, therefore, wise to have the older codes at hand, when you start upgrading.
How to Convert the Desired QuarkXPress File
You've now successfully installed and activated the Q2ID Plugin. Converting Quark files is now as easy as opening an InDesign file. Just go to the "File" menu and choose "Open", just like you would open an InDesign file. In the file selection window that pops up, you normally weren't able to select Quark files, for they where grayed out. But, with Q2ID installed, you are able to select all and any version of QuarkXPress files and click on the "Open" button. A timeline shows the progress of the conversion, after which the document will open as a new InDesign document, ready to be edited and saved as an InDesign file. It is that easy and very complete!
