Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to Earth - just 4.24 light-years away. That sounds close, until you try to actually get there. At Voyager 1's speed, the journey would take over 73,000 years. The Parker Solar Probe, the fastest object humanity has ever built, would still need 6,600 years. Even Breakthrough Starshot, the most ambitious interstellar mission ever funded, was quietly put on indefinite hold in 2025 after spending just $4.5 million of its $100 million budget.

In this video, we break down every layer of why reaching the nearest star is already terrifying - from the raw distance that turns "nearest" into a cruel joke, to the rocket equation that demands a 68.5-million-metric-ton spacecraft just to send 50 people at 5% of light speed. We explore what galactic cosmic rays do to the human brain over decades, why a single microgram dust grain hits like a car crash at 10% of light speed, and what it psychologically means to send a message home and wait nearly nine years for a reply. Then we confront the deepest problem of all: time itself, and why even relativistic speeds don't save you - they just turn you into a stranger arriving in a future that no longer remembers you.

The closest star is already too far. Everything beyond it is worse.
