How to connect your 2.4 GHz smart devices to your mesh WiFi network
Setting up your smart devices on a mesh WiFi home network can be a challenging proposition.
Most smart devices only work with the 2.4 GHz WiFi band, so they struggle to connect to a mesh WiFi network that only broadcasts one WiFi network (as opposed to broadcasting separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks).
To get around this problem, you can perform the following steps to connect your smart devices to your mesh WiFi:
•Temporarily turn off the 5 GHz network on your mesh WiFi nodes: this simplifies the setup of your smart device, because it won’t get confused and try to connect to the 5 GHz network
•Set up your smart device and connect it to your mesh WiFi: with the 5 GHz network disabled, this ensures that your smart device is connected to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network
•In your mesh WiFi settings, configure your smart device to only use the 2.4 GHz band: this ensures that your smart device won’t try to connect to the 5 GHz WiFi network once your WiFi nodes start broadcasting it again
•Turn the 5 GHz WiFi network back on for your mesh WiFi nodes: this will return your mesh WiFi to the same configuration it had before you set up your smart device
In following these steps, you’ll have a fully functioning mesh WiFi home network, as well as a smart device that’s working properly on your mesh home network.
