Combing: Working with Wool Combs

At first glance, combing may seem simple, but it's not. Every movement matters.
You can't just comb the wool and then effortlessly stretch it. Doing so will simply tear it, and new short pieces, pills, and lint will form.

Before combing, you need to straighten the fiber. To do this, you can use brushes to comb it, or use your fingers to pull the fiber in different directions and then fold it back together. Repeat this several times until a bundle of parallel fibers is formed.

How should you properly comb down?

1. Start combing the fiber from the very ends, holding it with the fingers of both hands. Each time, thread the fiber onto the needles and try not to lower it, but rather to pull it through the needles in different directions.

2. During combing, some of the down will remain on the needles, while some will remain in your hands. Place the fibers in one hand on top of those in the other and continue combing until all the down is on the comb. After this, take your time; all actions should be smooth. This is necessary to preserve the fiber, comb it carefully, and minimize breakage.

The entire process should resemble combing hair with a comb, smoothly moving upward as you comb.

3. Once a tuft is formed at the base of the needles, begin pulling the fiber into a wide ribbon. Using the little fingers of both hands, braid the wooden frame, grasp the down from both sides and pull it alternately in different directions from the comb. Try not to break it, but rather pull it into a ribbon.

4. When both ribbons are pulled out, fold one on top of the other and repeat. This process should be repeated at least twice, and sometimes more. It all depends on the condition of the fluff.

5. After pulling the ribbons out for the last time, fold them on top of each other. Next, roll the ribbon into a roll, forming a tow.

💫Try not to prepare the tow too far in advance. It's best to prepare it just before spinning.
