The song is from The Smiths' second proper studio album, Meat is Murder, closing out side 1. Johnny Marr has said the Meat Is Murder is his least favorite Smiths LP, however as he told Uncut magazine in February 2008: "'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore' was always one of my favorites. It just fell through the roof. It was one of those lovely times when the feeling just falls down on you from the ceiling somewhere and it almost plays itself. It gives an almost esoteric feeling."
Incredibly, this was the only single released from "Meat Is Murder," unless you count "How Soon Is Now" (not technically a Meat Is Murder track as it was added to the USA release only).
