Diwali (Deepavali) is a festival of lights and is a gazette holiday in India. Followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism observe various customs related to Diwali. Diwali/Deepavali is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.
Diwali celebrations may last for up to five days. Many people decorate their home and workplaces with tiny electric lights or small clay oil lamps. Bowls of water with candles and flowers floating on the surface are also popular decorations.
Many people make a special effort to clean their homes and yards before Diwali. They may also wash themselves with water and fragrant oils, wear new clothes and give gifts of sweets to family members, close friends and business associates. Fireworks are set off in the evening in some areas. Melas (fairs) is held in many towns and villages.
People in different regions in India may celebrate Diwali on various dates. This is because traditional lunar calendars can be interpreted in different ways. For example, Deepavali in Tamil Nadu is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aipasi.
தீபாவளி (Deepavali, Diwali) அல்லது தீப ஒளித்திருநாள் என்பது ஐந்து நாட்கள் கொண்டாடப்படுகின்ற பண்டிகையாகும். இது இந்து, சீக்கியம், சைனம் மற்றும் பௌத்தம் மதத்தின் மிகவும் பிரபலமான பண்டிகைகளில் ஒன்றாகும். இப்பண்டிகை இந்தியா இலங்கை சிங்கப்பூர் உட்பட பல நாடுகளிலும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. சில இடங்களில் வெவ்வேறு நாட்களில் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. அதாவது, வாழ்க்கையின் இருளை நீக்கி, ஒளியைக் கொடுக்கும் பண்டிகையாக தீபாவளி பண்டிகை கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.
இப்பண்டிகை ஐப்பசி மாதத்தில் திரயோதசி, சதுர்த்தசி, அமாவாசை மற்றும் அதற்கடுத்த சுக்கிலப்பிரதமை, பௌ-பீச்சு ஆகிய நாட்களில் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. தமிழகத்தில் சில ஆண்டுகளில் ஐப்பசி அமாவாசை முன்தினம் நரக சதுர்த்தசி அன்று கொண்டாடுகிறார்கள். பெரும்பாலான ஆண்டுகளில் தீபாவளி பண்டிகை ஐப்பசி மாத அமாவாசை நாளன்று கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. கிரகொரியின் நாட்காட்டி படி அக்டோபர் 17ஆம் நாளிலிருந்து நவம்பர் 15ஆம் தேதி வரையான நாட்களில் தீபாவளி வருகிறது.
இந்தியா, நேபாளம், இலங்கை, மியான்மர், சிங்கப்பூர், மலேசியா மற்றும் பிசி போன்ற நாடுகளில் அரசு விடுமுறை தினமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்துக்கள் மட்டுமின்றி சீக்கியர்களும், சமணர்களும் கூட இப்பண்டிகையை வெவ்வேறு காரணங்களுக்காக கொண்டாடுகின்றனர். மலேசியா, சிங்கையில் வாழும் இந்தியர்களும், தீபாவளியைக் கோலாகலமாகக் கொண்டாடுகின்றனர்.
