Midday News - The Thai military revealed that after two conflicts with Cambodia, Thailand seized over 18,000 rai of Thai land. Today, the Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces is scheduled to inspect the first border fence construction site in Chanthaburi province.
This afternoon, General Ukrit Boontanon, Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, is scheduled to visit and inspect the construction of the first phase of the Thai-Cambodian border fence at border markers 52-54 in Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi province. The first phase covers a distance of 1.3 kilometers, which is the border area agreed upon by Thailand and Cambodia through the Joint Border Commission (JBC).
There are also plans for a second phase, to be constructed at border markers 54-59, covering approximately 7 kilometers, bringing the total fence construction to 8.3 kilometers.
Regarding the gaps in the fence that caused previous controversy, large hinged steel plates have been installed over border marker 52 to allow the Thai-Cambodian Joint Border Commission (JBC) to access and inspect the border marker.
Regarding the two rounds of fighting with Cambodia, the Royal Thai Army has reclaimed approximately 18,000 rai of Thai land. This is divided into over 12,000 rai under the jurisdiction of the 2nd Army Area and over 6,000 rai under the jurisdiction of the 1st Army Area. The army has deployed and rotated troops along the border.
Meanwhile, the Facebook page "Thai Burma railway, the Death Railway" posted satellite images of Cambodian military bases in the Khao Prasitthiso area, showing Cambodian units with 82mm mortars and recoilless rifles. The images indicate significant expansion of the base with roads built. Supporting weapons are not visible in the satellite images due to concealment.
At Phu Phi, Cambodian military bases are positioned to defend the Don Toulon Temple, with 57mm and 100mm guns scattered throughout, and importantly, T-55 tanks.
At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, confirmed that Thailand has not closed the door to negotiations, but rather Cambodia has closed the door to dialogue and resorted to a forced compromise.
Thailand does not have a problem with this, but notes that it wonders why Cambodia refuses to initiate discussions with Thailand. Thailand's intention is to have negotiations under rules that both sides respect, but Cambodia is not responding, preferring to fight through a forced compromise process, even though voluntary compromise is still available. Therefore, Thailand considers this a decision by Cambodia to be closing the door to negotiations on the land border.
Mr. Sihasak reiterated that Thailand's stance is to have bilateral discussions on both the land and maritime borders. Currently, the Cabinet has approved the new chairman and members of the Joint Border Committee (JBC).
This is an internal technical matter for Thailand, but it does not mean that Thailand will begin negotiations with Cambodia. This is a separate issue.
