On November 2, 2016, Keith Papini returned home to find his wife, 34-year-old mother of two, Sherry Papini, missing.
Police searched for Sherry for 22 days. On November 24, at 4:30 a.m., Thanksgiving Day, 150 miles from where Sherry went missing, a driver spotted a woman on the side of the road who was clearly in shock. Sherry was taken to the hospital, where her belongings were submitted for DNA testing. Sherry had bruises and blood stains on her back, arms, leg, head, and all over her body. According to Sherry, she was kidnapped by two Latina women. They abused her and told her she would be sold into sexual slavery. Furthermore, a brand was burned into Sherry's back.
Sherry spent three weeks in a living hell, where she was beaten and abused, after which... They just let her go?
According to Sherry, she had no idea why they suddenly decided to release her. Then the officers went to her home to talk about what happened. Sherry also reported two suspects in her kidnapping. Eleven months later, police presented two composite sketches based on Sherry's statements, but the lower half of their faces was obscured. Around the same time, the police received DNA test results, but the results were confusing.
The officers' next step, of course, was to run this DNA through their databases. Three years later, investigators requested judicial approval to test this DNA on unofficial websites. People upload their DNA to these sites to discover their family tree. So, if the officers can find this man's relatives, they'll have a lead.
