Discovery of X-Rays - MOST Interesting Facts
X-rays were discovered by accident in 1895 by the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. Roentgen was experimenting with cathode rays, which are streams of electrons observed in vacuum tubes. While working in his laboratory at the University of Würzburg, Roentgen noticed that a fluorescent screen coated with barium platinocyanide began to glow, even though it was not in direct line with the cathode ray tube and was shielded by a heavy cardboard covering. This unexpected fluorescence indicated that some kind of invisible rays were being emitted from the tube.
Roentgen initially called these unknown rays "X-rays," with "X" representing the unknown. He found that these rays could penetrate various materials, including human tissue, but were blocked by denser substances like bones and metal. This discovery allowed him to create the first X-ray image, famously of his wife’s hand, which showed the bones of her fingers and her wedding ring.
Roentgen's discovery of X-rays revolutionized medicine by providing a non-invasive method to look inside the human body, leading to rapid advancements in medical diagnostics. For his groundbreaking work, Roentgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
