If you are looking to become a backend developer, I feel like learning PHP is a little easier, and will make you more marketable. If you are interested in becoming a front-end developer, I would learn JavaScript, as it's very common to work with it on the front-end. Keep in mind, if you favor front-end development, but eventually want to learn how to build the backend of a website as well, knowing JavaScript gives you a great head-start into building something on Node.js.
