GLUT (OpenGL Utility Toolkit) was created by Mark J. Kilgard as a way to facilitate writing cross-platform portable OpenGL applications, by abstracting the functions to define and control windows, and monitor keyboard and mouse input.

To demonstrate the potential of his creation, Mark himself wrote a series of basic demos that run across different platforms with none or minimum modification.

I've compiled the unmodified code to run on:
IRIX 6.5.30m on my SGI Octane with a MIPS processor and SGI graphics
HP-UX 11.11 on my HP C8000 with a PA-RISC processor and ATI graphics
Debian Linux 10 (software renderer) on my HP C8000

This is almost 30 years of code compatibility!
