Gothic art, which emerged in the 12th century, transformed European architecture and art until the 16th century, spreading from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia and the Middle East. Rooted in the vision of Abbot Suger at Saint-Denis, Gothic architecture sought to elevate the spirit through light and verticality. Pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and luminous stained-glass windows created awe-inspiring cathedrals. Gothic art also revolutionized sculpture and altarpieces. Across Europe, different styles flourished: Classical and Flamboyant in France, Perpendicular in England, Manueline in Portugal, Isabelline in Spain. Spain’s Gothic treasures include the cathedrals of Burgos, León, Toledo, Seville, and the Silk Exchange in Valencia.
