Skyrim Collision Mesh Tutorial - NifSkope, Chunk Merge & Nif Optimizer
Learn how to add a collision mesh to any Skyrim mesh using NifSkope, Chunk Merge, Nif Optimizer, and BSA Extractor. This quick tips guide walks you through the full process step by step, no prior experience required.
Whether you're creating a custom prop, fixing a mesh that has no collision, or modding Skyrim interiors, collision meshes are essential for making objects feel real in-game. In this NifSkope tutorial, Skyking breaks down the exact workflow used by experienced mod authors simplified for everyone.
Step 1. Extract barrel 02 onto your desktop (skyrim data folder, open meshes0.bsa, in search box type "barrel02", uncheck all, and check only the barrel.
Step 2. Open barrel02 in nifskope and remove mesh. Save and exit.
Step 3. Create a folder on your desktop. Name it whatever you want. Copy/paste your mesh into the folder. Copy and paste that new mesh again in the same location. You'll now have yourmesh.nif and yourmesh-copy.nif in that folder.
Step 4. Open Nif Optimizer, direct it to your new mesh folder, click "LE" in the bottom right of Nif Optimizer and hit "Convert"
Step 5. Open Chunk Merge in the NifUtil app. There are 3 file boxes, in the first one, direct to your mesh folder and choose the non-copy version of your mesh, in the second box, add the copy version of your mesh, in the 3rd box add barrel02. Click "Convert". You should see "Nif Converted Successfully"
Step 6. In Nif Optimizer, click SSE in the bottom right then click convert.
Step 7. Open your mesh in NifSkope and apply the material setting to your collision mesh.
Step 8. Copy/paste your new mesh back into your mod folder.
