The Unity runtime fee policy change caused a massive stir in the game development sphere. After an outcry of both large and small game developers, Unity has revised their new pricing model. Additionally, the Unity CEO has stepped down.
Is the new Unity pricing model revision combined with the CEO leaving enough to get game developers back?
With Unity's previous pricing model change, the company lost an immense amount of user trust and respect. The Unity game engine is one of the most used game engines throughout the entire game dev market, so although the initial install and revenue thresholds were quite high, the change left a sour taste in a lot of indie game developers' mouths.
In my previous video on the Unity drama and runtime fee, I mentioned that I really like the Unity engine as a technology, but was worried about future actions from the company. This revision I think is definitely a push in the right direction, but the game dev sphere still feels slightly unsteady.
What will you do? Stay with Unity or move to a new engine like Godot or Unreal?
I'm planning a video on my reaction to the Godot engine, as its really caught my eye!
