TIMESTAMPS BELOW
Reaper is an incredible piece of software, no discussion needed there. The tools and funcionality that it offers are unparallelled in other similarly priced software. In this video I see how easy it is to master a track using Reaper's stock plugins.
Reaper has some fantastic tools on offer, it's EQs, multiband compressors and reverb are great, but I just love the JS tools. Imagine having a plugin that you could alter the code of and use the new version straight away; perfect!
Mastering in Reaper is very similar to mastering in other DAWs; you take the processes you know and love and apply them to a new program, all the while maintaining an open mind and striving for the best sonic balance for the music at hand. This kind of mastering can also be consider 'post mixing', whereby you take your track out of its normal environment, the mix session, and open it in a brand new session as a stereo track. This gives you an opportunity to gain some new perspective where you're not persuaded by the allure of raising the kick fader 0.25dB, or automating just one more syllable in the vocal. You can bring up your track, bring up a reference track, and get to work making your master the best, most well balanced, beautifully dynamic piece of music you've ever worked on.
Spoiler alert: I get annoyed at around 19:30 when I cant figure out why the stock compressors aren't changing the sound. Still trying to figure that one out.
2:30 - EQ
8:46 - Multiband Compression
12:05 - Mid/Side Compression
16:20 - Corrective EQ

EDIT: As has been pointed out, Reaper is not free and should be purchased after the initial 60 day evaluation period.
JS does not stand for JavaScript, but refers to JSFX plugins, which are written in EEL2 language.
