Nuclear Secrets Inside a Peanut Butter Sandwich
On 26 June 2021, an FBI team watched Jonathan Toebbe service a pre-arranged dead drop in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Nearby, his wife Diana stood as lookout. Inside the ordinary object the agents recovered was a blue 16GB SanDisk card, wrapped in plastic and placed between slices of bread on half a peanut-butter sandwich.
The sandwich did not expose the Toebbes. It was evidence collected during an FBI sting that had already begun. This is the documented story of the correspondence, the drops, the nuclear-related Restricted Data, and the investigation that ended in arrest and sentencing.
