The 5-man chain game system can be used in both defensive and offensive formations, making it very tactically flexible. The chain can be positioned in different ways. Coach David Niedermeier of the MFS Munich Football School explains in the video "5-man chain defensive basic formation" which different formation variations can arise from the 5-4-1 game system in a game and how the coach can react to different game situations.
The following system formations are predominantly used:
• 5-4-1 formation
The 5-4-1 formation is particularly focused on defense and is primarily used to maintain a score. This game system also allows for the effective use of counterattacks. Attacks from strong opposing teams can be effectively repelled, and the five defensive players positioned in the back row allow for effective defense of through balls.
The 5-4-1 system not only allows for defensive formations, but can also be used as an offensive tactic to launch quick attacks. The central defender then moves into midfield and can thus exert more pressure forward. This creates a 4-5-1 formation, from which attacking pressing and forechecking can be played at any time.
• 5-3-2 Formation
The 5-3-2 system, frequently used by Bayern Munich, is designed for the two wide players to assume a dual role of defense and attack. This role requires considerable effort and a high degree of stamina from the wide players. The attacking players move into the center during build-up play, creating a numerical advantage in midfield. This allows for optimal counter-pressing with a numerical advantage when the ball is lost. A good physical condition of the players in terms of strength, endurance, agility, speed, and coordination is therefore essential for this position.
• 3-5-2 Formation
This formation is very similar to the 5-3-2 formation, with the difference that the two wide players are more attacking when in possession. The center backs are positioned wider so that if the ball is lost, the wide player furthest from the ball can drop back into the defense, forming a back four.
In the following video, "5-man defense: basic formation," you'll learn how flexibly the 5-man defense can be used for defense and how you can adapt your team's tactical formation to the opponent as the game progresses!
