Routing Protocol || types of Routing Protocol || RIP , OSPF , EIGRP , BGP in Hindi
A routing protocol is a set of rules that determine how routers communicate with each other to dynamically learn about the available paths to destination networks and to select the best paths for forwarding packets. These protocols are essential for the functioning of computer networks, particularly large-scale ones like the internet.
Routing protocols can be categorized into two main types:
Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs): These are used within an autonomous system (AS) or within a single organization's network. Examples include:
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First): A link-state routing protocol commonly used in large enterprise networks and ISPs.
RIP (Routing Information Protocol): A distance-vector protocol that was widely used in smaller networks, though it's largely outdated now.
IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System): Similar to OSPF but often used in service provider networks.
Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGPs): These are used to route traffic between different autonomous systems. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the predominant EGP used on the internet.
Routing protocols operate based on various metrics, such as hop count, bandwidth, delay, and reliability, to determine the best path for forwarding packets. They also employ mechanisms to ensure loop-free paths and adapt to changes in network topology, such as link failures or new network connections.
Different routing protocols have different strengths and weaknesses, making them suitable for different network environments and requirements. The choice of routing protocol depends on factors like network size, topology, scalability, convergence time, and administrative preferences.
