In this episode of Back to Basics, we take down the old chimney and fireplace from our 100-year-old stone farmhouse in the mountains of Portugal. In winter, this fire made it warmer outside than inside — a symbol of how far the house had drifted from what it once was.

As we continue living inside during the renovation, every step forward takes a bit more effort. But with the chimney gone, we’re one step closer to sealing things up before the cold returns — and preparing for a new roof.
Between the dust and the stone, we turn to the land. The grapevines, once left to overgrow, hide an unexpected abundance — huge bunches of deep red grapes, descendants of vines first brought here by the Romans.
A season of endings and beginnings.
