Within a short time, two incidents of forced hijab use occurred at two public schools. The first occurred at Bangunpatan 1 High School in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The second occurred at SMP Negeri 46, Jakarta. These cases increased the number of bullying incidents against female students who do not wear the hijab.
Bullying against non-hijab-wearing students has become increasingly frequent since 2014, especially after the Ministry of Education and Culture issued a regulation requiring Muslim female students to wear the hijab. They were bullied with questions like, "When will I wear the hijab?" "Oh, I'm beautiful when I wear the hijab." They were advised to wear the hijab or given tutorials on how to wear it, and even publicly humiliated during ceremonies. They even experienced expulsion from school or pressure to drop out.
In 2021, Human Rights Watch (HRW) documented the bullying experienced by women and girls in Indonesia. They interviewed more than 100 women who had experienced bullying and harassment for refusing to wear the hijab.
Many victims are traumatized by the bullying and coercion. But that doesn't stop the women from fighting for their freedom.
