Whether you are setting posts for a deck or fence there are some easy tips and tricks here that can make the job easier. The biggest differences between setting a post for a deck or other load bearing project and a fence is the need for a footing. Always check local codes for frost depth and other info on what is authorized for a footing. Some areas will allow for pea gravel or a "biscuit" to be used while other areas may require a cement footing.

For our garden fence here today we will be just using dirt as a backfill with no cement support. The fence will only be 4' tall when completed and will not have pickets that will catch wind. This will reduce the need for side to side support around the posts. If you are installing a privacy fence with a solid surface such as dog eared pickets or other material you may want to add cement around each post to help with post movement.
