The romantic muse of the 19th century, the mysterious and cursed woman with the sickly look that turned the heads of many Victorians. The pale skin that contrasted with the bright lips and cheeks, the watery, quivering eyes.
This standard of beauty competed with that of the "English rose" a buxom, healthy woman, with a narrow waist, also with very pale skin but not bloodless like that of the romantic muse.
