Dual boot | How to install Windows 10 and Fedora Linux | with UEFI secure boot | 2017
Read This Before you begin:
1. Backup your system, I am not responsible for data loss or malfunction
2. A blank USB drive, of at least 1.5GB, formatted as FAT32
3. Download Fedora live workstation ISO https://getfedora.org
4. Download and install Fedora liveusb creator http://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator
Objective:
1. To install Fedora alongside a Windows 10 installation. Either OS can be set as primary, Another OS is accessed by pressing F12, at splash screen, and selected in the Boot Manager.
2. Use easyLife to assist in installation of helpful programs and codecs http://easylifeproject.org
3. Describe how to remove Fedora installation.
Note: Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Secure Boot. This was to be a modern replacement for the aging BIOS system and would help ensure boot-time malware couldn’t be injected into a system.
Disable certain components within your BIOS. From within the BIOS, you will want to disable the following:
Quickboot/Fastboot
Intel Smart Response Technology (ISRT)
FastStartUp (if you have Windows 8).
To getting secure boot do the following:
Boot Windows 8
Press the Windows+I keys
Click Change PC Settings
Click General and then Advanced Startup
Click Restart now
Click UEFI Firmware settings.
In Windows 8.1, do the following:
From the left sidebar, go to Update and recovery
Click Advanced startup
Click Restart now.
NOTE: Some BIOSes are equipped to run in what is called EFI or “legacy” mode. If your BIOS does allow this mode, set it and you should have zero issues with Linux.
Installing Windows 10 and Fedora Linux on a computer with UEFI secure boot requires the following steps:
Create a backup of your important data.
Boot your computer into UEFI mode. This can be done by restarting the computer and repeatedly pressing the appropriate key (usually "F2", "Del", or "Esc") to enter the UEFI firmware setup.
Disable Secure Boot in the UEFI firmware setup. This option is usually found in the "Security" or "Boot" section.
Create a bootable USB drive with the Windows 10 installation media.
Insert the USB drive into your computer and restart it. Press the appropriate key to enter the UEFI firmware setup.
Select the option to boot from the USB drive. This will start the Windows 10 installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10.
Once Windows 10 is installed, download the Fedora Linux distribution from the official website and create a bootable USB drive with it.
Insert the Fedora Linux USB drive into your computer and restart it. Press the appropriate key to enter the UEFI firmware setup.
Select the option to boot from the Fedora Linux USB drive. This will start the Fedora Linux installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Fedora Linux.
Once Fedora Linux is installed, re-enable Secure Boot in the UEFI firmware setup if desired.
Note: The exact steps and options may vary depending on your computer's manufacturer and the version of UEFI firmware it uses.
