I think optimizing this game for emulation will take several months to be fully playable even on midrange PCs and laptops. But in the meantime, I found that turning off V-Sync and capping the framerate to 30-45 FPS is the best solution for stable gameplay.
RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) was used to cap the framerate.
