Today on Direct Witness:
Sebastián Marset is the leader of the First Uruguayan Cartel (PCU), a criminal organization dedicated to trafficking cocaine from Paraguay to Europe, with the collaboration of the Italian mafia. Marset, 32, has been a fugitive since late 2021 and there is a one million dollar reward for his capture. He is accused of several crimes, including the murder of a Colombian prosecutor who was investigating him.
Marset has demonstrated a remarkable ability to evade justice, using false passports, bribing officials, and changing his identity. In 2021, he escaped from a prison in Uruguay with the help of his brother-in-law, who is also a fugitive. That same year, he left Dubai with a Uruguayan passport issued to him by his country's government, which sparked a political scandal that ended with the dismissal of Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo.
In 2021, Marset settled in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where he lived with his wife, Yanina García, and their three children under the alias Luis Paulo Amorim Santos, a supposed Brazilian citizen. There, he played soccer for a local club and coordinated his drug trafficking operations. Marset used the Paraguay-Paraná waterway and the ports of Rosario, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo to ship drugs to Europe.
On July 29, 2023, Bolivian police launched an operation to capture Marset after receiving information from authorities in Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and Interpol. However, Marset managed to escape, apparently with the complicity of a Bolivian police intelligence colonel who tipped him off. Marset went to Cochabamba, where it is believed he boarded a private plane to an unknown destination.
Marset is considered one of the most intelligent and dangerous drug traffickers in Latin America, having infiltrated institutions and mafia networks in several countries. His current whereabouts are a mystery, and his capture is a top priority for anti-drug agencies. Marset is the king of the south, the drug lord who defies the authorities and whom no one can catch.
