Mass searches and detentions of Muslim theologians and muftis have been carried out in various regions – from the Volga region to Karelia and Moscow. The reasons for the repressions range from accusations of disobeying police and bribery to terrorism. Some of those detained are accused of working for radicals from the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization banned in Russia.
