Al Shier, Executive Producer at Blur in Venice, CA,: "Blur was asked to create an experience to introduce viewers to the most horrific enemy Earth has even known. Created by an accidental rift in space and time, The Melding not only seeks to destroy the planet but is also generating an army of its own hell-bent on man's annihilation.

"Firefall is a team-based action shooter, so the goal was to highlight a crew of advanced soldiers in their mission to extract Earth's most precious resource, Crystite - something absolutely vital to their survival. The problem: everything in this new world comes at a price with the very act of breaching Earth's core having fierce consequences. The goal was to enter this world and discover first hand what sacrifices lay ahead for the survival of humanity.

"One of the biggest challenges arose from the production and delivery timeline. Since the project had a fairly short schedule we were required to assign more lighting and compositing artists to the work than we would normally. Maintaining a consistent look across all of the shots was critical with such a large team, especially given that we didn't have the luxury of ironing out all of the technical issues ahead of time.

"The fog was one of these factors as it contributed greatly to the overall look and feel of the piece. We also found that the fog could impact render times by a large degree, which further necessitated getting everything streamlined technically and looking good.

"Another challenge was the opening vista shot and how we brought to life the vast cloud layer with enough 3D depth in order to make it look believable against the lighter side of the frame. This shot was one of the last to come together."
