Sulfation of battery plates is the deposition of lead sulfate on them, which reduces the nominal capacity of the power supply and makes it incapable of generating the required current. In a serviceable battery, it resembles small crystals that turn back into electrolyte when the battery is recharged from a generator or other charger. But in heavily discharged units that have not been charged for a long time, processes that are detrimental to them begin. First, the sulfate will pass into the electrolyte, and then settle on the plates in the form of large crystals. They will cover the working area of the electrodes and create unnecessary barriers to the normal operation of the electrolyte. Excessive sulfation reduces the capacity of the battery and shortens its life.
