Steps:
1. Use the Shuffle tool to turn the image b&w. (Align all points along the same channel, doesn't matter which color channel)
2. Change the layer blend mode of this Shuffle tool layer to overlay.
Instant contrast!
Now fine tune the image:
3. Bring up the shadows with RGB Curves.
