It's a cold day in New York when Stoya steps into MASS APPEAL HQ. The performer, dubbed the Pop Star of Porn in a 'Village Voice' cover story from 2013, is kind and quiet as she sits in the lobby wearing an oversized coat, waiting for her OPEN SPACE interview Once she's in front of the camera, though, she opens up, and it's easy to see just how comfortable she is putting herself on display.

The North Carolina native turned New York darling, by way of Philadelphia, made her name in the late-aughts by pushing an alt-porn aesthetic into the major porn production house, Digital Playground. Her non-traditional looks (by traditional porn standards), boundary-pushing performances and embrace of the internet and early social media quickly made her a star. She was named Best New Starlet at the 2009 AVN Awards and quickly parlayed her newfound fame as an adult video star into more mainstream visibility as a writer, thinker, businesswoman and performance artist. She's contributed to outlets ranging from Vice, Esquire and Nylon to The 'New York Times,' launched her own production company, TRENCHCOATx (billed as "curated smut"), held down a long-running sex column for 'Bullett,' dated Marilyn Manson, gone viral reading a book for photographer Clayton Cubitt's Hysterical Literature series, and much, much more.

Most recently, she's been performing in a Brooklyn production of 'Harakiri Kane (Die! Die, Again)', a play written by artist Dean Haspiel ('American Splendor,' 'Batman Adventures'), and prepping for the next installment of her book club, Sex Lit, which reconvenes on November 19 in Brooklyn (more info here).

All of which is to say, don't sleep on Stoya. She's not just another anonymous face in your NSFW porn feeds, she's a force. Watch her Open Space interview above, read responsibly, do your Googles (responsibly) and enjoy.
