Plants are an excellent way to relieve your heartburn, especially licorice, which has anti-inflammatory, healing, eupeptic, antacid, and antiulcer effects. Dr. Laure Martinat, naturopath, explains how to use it.
-------------------------------
Licorice Root Decoction
• 3g of licorice root per cup, simmer covered for 5 minutes, then infuse for 15 minutes with the heat off before straining.
• 2 to 3 cups per day, to be consumed after meals.
If you are unable to prepare a decoction, opt for licorice in the form of standardized fresh plant extract (SPE) at a dose of 2.5ml twice a day between meals.
In both cases, it should be taken as a 4- to 6-week course of treatment, 5 days a week.
Reserved for adults, excluding pregnant and breastfeeding women. Do not use if taking corticosteroids, oral contraceptives, digitalis, or diuretics. Avoid use in cases of high blood pressure and, on medical advice, in cases of kidney disease or potassium levels.
At the same time, adopt a few simple but effective rules that limit reflux and damage to the gastroesophageal mucosa:
• Limit your consumption of coffee, alcohol, tobacco, sparkling water and soda, all hot spices, ultra-processed ready meals, and foods high in saturated fat, which slow gastric emptying.
• Take the time to chew each mouthful thoroughly.
• When reflux is present, eat your meal at least two hours before lying down or sleeping. • Don't deprive yourself of turmeric and ginger in cooking: they both relieve heartburn and improve digestion.
Of course, if symptoms persist or if signs of severity appear, you should consult your doctor immediately.
