Syracuse University SOA ARC407 studio project

By Ziqi Wang, Zhaoyi Wang, Yue Zhuo

Instructor: Daniele Profeta

Site: Marsala in Sicily

Our project draws inspiration from the intricate interplay between nature and humans at our site, capturing the moments and tensions that arise from their interaction. We observe how nature can redefine the functionality of man-made structures, such as moss-covered handrails that cease to serve their original purpose.

With this in mind, our proposal aims to reposition human and nonhuman entities and explore their evolving relationship within the site. We invite people to return periodically, witnessing the dynamic transformation of our project over time.

Through the use of abstract models and site posture diagrams, we have developed four spatial strategies: Moving, Enclosing, Blocking, and Incorporating. Each strategy facilitates specific interactions between people and nature, fostering a deeper connection.

Our project unfolds in four stages, each representing a distinct status of the architecture and its relationship with nature. Ultimately, it evolves into a captivating 'museum' that archives multiple spatial relationships between human and nonhuman entities.
