I have never been so broken yet felt so much love at the same time. As my friend Eric said, humans are pretty good at forgetting things… and I definitely forgot how hard it is to run 100km. I came into the Blackall 100 the fittest and strongest I’ve ever been, feeling confident at the start line. But in hindsight, I didn’t hydrate well enough the day before, and everyone who raced knows how hot it was out there.
Things slowly went downhill, and at 50km I noticed my urine was dark brown. It ended up being the toughest day of my life. But even though it was brutal, I walked away with so many lessons. I feel more connected to the present moment and to the people in my life because of it.
The Blackall 100 was such a beautiful event, and a huge thanks goes out to the race organizers and volunteers who made it all happen. And big love to everyone out on the course this year who supported me and helped me get to the finish. I was so close to pulling the pin so many times. There are too many people to thank, but here’s a few: my girlfriend Rika, who crewed for me; Ross & Nete, who waited 4 hours after the race while I was with the paramedics; Jordan, who was there to lift my spirits at 92km; and Chris, who sacrificed one of his Tailwind packets when my brain was mush, and I’d somehow lost my nutrition… the list goes on, and you know who you are.
I may make a video based on the what went wrong, what went right, the lessons I have learnt & how to overcome then for future.
Thank you.
