This week on Back To Basics, we take on some of the most dangerous jobs we’ve faced on the farm so far.

High above our mountain road, burnt and beetle-damaged pine trees have been leaning dangerously for years. Every time we passed beneath them, we wondered if that would be the day they came down.

So this week, it was finally time to face them.

With chainsaw in hand, we carefully bring down these massive dying trees, clear dangerous mimosa near the house to reduce summer fire risk, and open space for native oak forest to slowly reclaim the land.

Then it’s back to building life into our exhausted soil as we expand the vegetable gardens, bringing in compost, shaping new beds, and planting the next round of food for the season ahead.

Life on our farm in Portugal is never easy, but every hard day gets us one step closer to self-sufficiency.

Thanks for being here and supporting this journey.
