This is play through / cover of Love Gun by KISS (1978). This is the song which established Paul Stanley’s reputation as a poet ranking alongside Keats, Wordsworth and Shakespeare.
I used a Hal Leonard tab book for this one, and also watched a couple of YouTube tutorials.
This song is ideal for intermediate players like myself. It’s an absolute banger with a relatively easy rhythm part. The solo is a classic and has a short harmonised line at the end. I had fun recording that and putting the two parts side by side. I used by Strat for the second guitar part. I didn’t need to but thought it would look more interesting!
Paul Stanley takes some credit for coming up with the guitar solo, saying he based it on a song by The Blues Magoos called “(We Ain’t Got) Nothing Yet”. If you listen to that song it has the same rising triplet run but the second half of the Love Gun solo is very different. My guess is that Ace came up with the second part including the pinch harmonics and the iconic Jimmy-Page-style "smear" lick. Those seem very "Ace" to me.
I found the backing track on YouTube - thanks @forbiddenzone66. The guitars have been removed but all the other tracks remain, including the original vocal.
I used Amplitube for the tone. It’s not especially authentic to the original recording. I just messed around until I found a tone which sounded reasonably ok.
It was filmed on my iPhone with the audio captured directly in Amplitube, then the two glued together with iMovie.
