Today we're talking about the most common types of drill bits on the market. There are countless varieties, but in this post, we'll focus on the most common ones. If you're a DIY enthusiast or a handyman around the house, knowing the types of drill bits we'll discuss below will have you more than ready to tackle any project with a hammer drill.
You'll see the most commonly used types of drill bits for wood, metal, and masonry. We'll look at high-speed steel (HSS) drill bits, spade bits, and even porcelain drill bits—a more specialized type that can be useful for certain applications.
First, we'll look at metal drill bits, also known as high-speed steel (HSS) bits. These bits have two cutting edges that can be sharpened to extend their lifespan, and they typically have the same thickness from the tip to the shank. The most basic metal drill bits are made of blued high-speed steel, but higher-quality ones are made of cobalt. Cobalt increases the hardness and lifespan of the drill bit.
Next, we'll look at wood drill bits, which can be of two types: three-point drill bits or spade bits. The latter is for jobs where we need to drill a hole thicker than 10 mm.
And finally, we'll look at masonry drill bits, also known as carbide-tipped drill bits. Carbide is the material at the tip of the drill bit, and it's responsible for making the hole. These bits have blades that form an arrow shape; the more blades, the better the hole will be.
