Stunning book, messed up central character but so unapologetic it is refreshing. The writing is good. The writing is great. The writing will set you free. Among other things, I marvel at how well personas and Los Angeles is explained. At how beautifully simple the premise is and how much the author manages to achieve in just 50 odd small chapters. The audiobook is read by Kevin Bacon's daughter. There is trigger warnings for all readers, not just the ones who are easily triggered. But above all that, there is something likeable earthly, human, sinister yet within us about this book, that makes it organic, somehow a seismic feat of understanding. This book is so much more than just a bold statement. It's a kind of a masterpiece that should just be left alone to bask in its own doing and creation. It's about love, hate, death, life, desire, bad thoughts, darkness and triviality. This is alcohol for your mind in its single malt form.
This is my first book of the year.
