The Muruntau gold deposit is located in the Navoi region of Uzbekistan, 250 km from the city of Navoi, near the city of Zarafshan. Gold is mined in an open pit mine. The Muruntau open pit mine is the largest open pit gold mine in the world. The Muruntau gold deposit itself is considered the largest deposit on the planet. Confirmed gold reserves here are sufficient for the next 50 years of development.
Over 56 tons of gold, or over 2 million ounces of pure gold, are extracted from here annually. In addition to gold, silver, rare earths, uranium, quartz, and arsenic are also mined here.
Since 2019, Uzbekistan has been developing a new gold and copper deposit, Yoshlik-1, in Almalyk. Gold reserves at the Yoshlik-1 deposit in Almalyk exceed 5,000 tons. The deposit covers 11,000 hectares and is considered one of the largest in terms of proven reserves. It contains 13 types of valuable and rare metals, including gold, copper, silver, molybdenum, and selenium. To process these metals, the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AMMC) has been constructing a third copper processing plant (CPP-3) since the summer of 2021.
