Medieval torture or orthodontics? - This is a tongue grid.
MEDIEVAL TORTURE or ORTHODONTICS? - This is a LINGUAL GRILL
Why does she have these metal bars inside her mouth?
As you can see, this girl is undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces.
As you can see, she's biting with only two molars on each side, meaning she can't close her mouth completely.
This is known as an open bite. One of the causes of this open bite is lingual interposition, that is, the habit of sticking the tongue between the teeth, which will cause them to shift forward over time.
To prevent this habit and correct the bite with orthodontic treatment, these devices called lingual grills are used.
They are placed on the palate and prevent the tongue from getting between the teeth.
Therefore, although it may look like a medieval torture device, it serves a very important function.
