You can disable Google Photos “Backup & Sync” by accessing your device or desktop app settings, preventing future photo uploads while keeping existing photos in your account.
On Mobile Devices (Android / iPhone / iPad)
Open the Google Photos App: Locate the Google Photos app on your phone or tablet and tap to launch it
Access Settings: Tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner, then select Photos settings or Google Photos settings depending on your app version
Turn Off Backup & Sync: Tap Backup & Sync, then toggle the switch off. This stops automatic uploads of new photos and videos to Google Photos
Confirmation: You may see a prompt; confirm changes if required. Existing photos already backed up will remain in the cloud, but future photos will no longer sync
Optional Mobile Tips
Revoke App Access (iPhone): Go to Settings Google Photos Photos Allow Access and choose None to prevent uploads entirely
Disable Background App Refresh (iPhone / Android): Turning this off ensures Google Photos does not upload in the background, only syncing when the app is open
Manage Data Usage (Android): Go to Settings Apps Google Photos Network/Data Background data and toggle off to restrict background uploads
