Why are toll booths going away?

Toll agencies are tearing down staffed booths (cash lanes) because they are dangerous and slow. Instead, we have to start using electronic toll collection (ETC) -- those special transponder passes. But most toll passes won't work out of state. With no toll booths, how do you pay when you are on vacation?

I speak with Samuel Johnson, the chief operations officer for a southern California toll road agency (The Toll Roads - TCA), about a cool new technology which will soon make paying a toll easier than ever. It's called electronic toll interoperability, and it's all possible with a tiny sticker.
