Since his arrival in New York from his native Havana, Cuba, some 15 years ago, Manuel Valera has built a reputation as one of the most innovative and prolific musicians and composers in contemporary jazz. Leading several different aggregations and also working solo, Valera has consistently challenged and redefined himself, exploring new directions with each endeavor. Now, with the release of Urban Landscape on Destiny Records, Manuel Valera is once again displaying another aspect of his creativity. Groove Square features Valera on Fender Rhodes, Minimoog Voyager, DSI Prophet 08 keyboard and Hammond organ; John Ellis on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet; Nir Felder, guitar; John Benitez, bass; drummers E.J. Strickland and Jeff “Tain” Watts; Maurico Herrera and Paulo Stagnaro playing percussion; and Gregoire Maret blowing harmonica on two tracks.
