►The ocean is the basin-like part of the Earth's crust, encompassing approximately 71 percent of the Earth's crust. Oceans lie between continents and surround continents. The edges of oceans are called seas, while others are called bays. Sometimes we use the word "sea" to refer to the ocean, while others use the word "sea" to refer to the ocean.
The ocean covers approximately 70 percent of the Earth's surface and holds 96.5 percent of the planet's water. Therefore, it's no surprise that the ocean is the true regulator of climate and ecosystems that sustain life on Earth. Through the water cycle, wind and waves flowing around the planet, as well as creatures like whales that act as giant biological pumps, and microscopic organisms like phytoplankton, the ocean produces approximately half of the oxygen we breathe. It absorbs over 90 percent of the heat from human greenhouse gases, and stores approximately a quarter of the carbon dioxide released each year.
