While climate change may be the world’s most pressing environmental issue and the pursuit of economic progress has been what’s causing it, development cannot be stopped or even slowed down. The best compromise is to ensure that economic development not only adapts to a changing climate but also contributes to lessening what has been causing it.
New buildings are being required to be more climate-responsive, but their occupants’ comfort remains a primary consideration. The challenge now for architects, engineers, and interior designers is to, therefore, strike that ideal balance of comfort and energy-saving. While there may be several strategies to choose from, the important first step is to know the level of comfort zone where people can still be optimally comfortable and thereby productive.
