Crossovers have been the most popular body style in Russia for several years now. This choice is easy to justify for car owners. When buying a car, many want a truly versatile option that can be driven comfortably around the city and, if their mother-in-law asks them to transport an old sideboard to the dacha, they won't have to order freight. A crossover combines all these qualities. Today, we'll compare two popular compact crossovers in our country: the updated Volkswagen Tiguan and the all-new Hyundai Tucson. We'll briefly examine each car individually, and then compare technical specifications, trim levels, and prices.
The fourth-generation Hyundai Tucson has been officially unveiled in Russia. Many say that this model's design foreshadowed the future of the company's vehicles. The new crossover will be assembled in Russia at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. The Tucson has received a significant refresh. Its distinctive appearance is given by the multi-tiered headlights, large side air intakes, and a black insert at the bottom of the front bumper. The rear of the new Hyundai Tucson is no less graceful. The car now features LED taillights and a horizontal LED strip running the entire width of the trunk lid. From the side, the new crossover features flared wheel arches and clean lines. Finally, the new Hyundai Tucson's roof now features a panoramic sunroof with a sliding front section. The crossover's interior has not only been improved, but also made ultra-modern. Starting with the base trim, the crossover features a digital instrument cluster, a large multimedia system display, and a suite of convenient extras. For the first time in the Russian market, the Tucson will be equipped with the Hyundai BlueLink system, which allows you to control many of the car's functions via your phone.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is based on the basic MQB platform, but its technical specifications, exterior design, and interior have undergone a number of changes. The Kaluga-assembled model is available for the Russian market, differing from the German version in its powertrain and trim levels. Engineers also worked to improve trim levels, adding three-zone climate control, heated seats, a small touchscreen display, and a number of other comfort and safety features to the base model.
As for engines, the Tucson is equipped with two gasoline and one diesel engine. The 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter Smartstream gasoline units produce 150 and 190 hp, respectively. The weaker engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. The 2.5-liter engine is paired only with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
As for the diesel engine, the 2.0-liter unit produces 186 hp. The diesel engine is paired only with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the selected trim level and modification, the 2021 Hyundai Tucson crossover can be equipped with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Regardless of trim level, the new 2021 Tucson will feature the Drive Mode Select (DMS) system for selecting driving modes. If the car is equipped with all-wheel drive, the MTC (Multi-Terrain Control) system will also be available. Gasoline engines can run on AI-92 or higher, and the diesel, according to the manufacturer, is quite fuel-efficient in both hot and cold climates. The trunk volume is 539 liters. Ground clearance is 181 mm.
The Tiguan is equipped exclusively with turbocharged gasoline engines. The 1.4-liter engine produces 125 hp and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The next-generation 1.4-liter engine, producing 150 hp, is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both engines are front-wheel drive. A turbocharged 1.4-liter engine producing 150 hp and a robotic transmission, combined with all-wheel drive, recently became available. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engines produce 180 and 220 hp. Both are paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The trunk volume is 615 liters. Ground clearance is 191 mm.
The base Tucson Classic trim level, with a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine producing 150 hp, a manual transmission, and front-wheel drive, features LED daytime running lights, a six-airbag package, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The list also includes a dashboard with a 4.2-inch color display for the trip computer and an 8-inch touchscreen display for the multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Other nice touches include functional buttons on the steering wheel, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats. The base model, according to the stated price, will set buyers back at least 1,697,000 rubles.
