Examining the lossless crop zoom feature for Panasonic cameras: an exceptional tool for amateur filmmakers and photographers to refine framing without extra gear or loss of detail.

First introduced on the Lumix S9 last year, Crop Zoom (and Composite Zoom) is now available for all their full-frame cameras in Panasonic's January firmware update (covered in a different video).

It does not use digital upscaling but leverages the whole of the sensor’s resolution to provide up to 3x zoom at 1080p and 1.6x zoom for 4K—without any loss of quality!

I’ll walk you through accessing it via the video settings, adjusting the focal length display and zoom speed, and using it for practical shooting, and using it to manually pull zoom.

There are demos on my Panasonic Lumix S5II showing showing how the 1.6x zoom extends my Sigma primes nicely. The 35mm becomes a 56mm, a 65mm becomes a 105mm and 90mm reaches 140mm; each with everything between - retaining those fast apertures and depth of field control.

If you’re interested in more video tips or the firmware update process, take a look at my other tutorials and do please subscribe to the channel if you found it useful or interesting, thanks.
