Jio disrupted the sector, with its free offers and although it started charging subscribers from this April onwards, it has left behind an industry under a debt of Rs 5 lakh crore in a consolidation spree to survive. Its recently launched 4G feature phone is expected to start the next bout of war.
Oommen added that incumbents mentioned how Jio was offering free voice to customers but said global firms like Google too had offered many services free and it all depends on what the business model is.
At the summit, he spoke on the next phase of technology which will be supported by artificial intelligence, open cloud and added that the power and performance of device silicon is packed with more processing than laptops and desktops
Oommen emphasised the need for more security and highlighted the increased frequency of data breach.
He added that consumers now want more advanced technology and services without significant costs, open development programs and not be limited. The demand for data has grown exponentially and firms will have to provide all inclusive plans with data benefits, make voice IP centric, ensure security and reorient business to data centric beyond content subscription model.
Jio, the telecom unit of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), posted a net loss of Rs 270.59 crore for the quarter ended September on revenue of Rs 6,147 crore and surprised the market by reporting a positive earnings before interest and tax (ebit), helped by strong user additions and cost efficiencies.
